About our coalition

The Women's Empowerment Alliance for Violence Elimination brings together dedicated non-profit service providers across Southern Vancouver Island. Uniting our diverse mandates under one shared purpose, we advocate relentlessly to end gender-based and intimate-partner violence and ensure survivor safety.

Born from tragedy, united for change

Our alliance was forged following the tragic femicide of Dr. Laura Gover in Victoria in January 2026. Gathering together on the steps of the Victoria Courthouse on the morning of her abuser's first court appearance, frontline workers and community advocates demanded deep accountability from the systemic structures that failed to protect her. These tragedies are preventable. While our organizations work tirelessly every day to keep women and children safe, municipal, provincial, and federal governments must walk this path alongside us to transform systems and safeguard lives.

Women's safety is public safety

When we speak with one voice, institutions listen. Through our collaborative initiative championing the principle that women's safety is public safety, we launched an impactful letter-writing campaign directed to our local MLAs. Our joint advocacy has opened crucial dialogues with police departments, elected officials, and provincial policymakers, ensuring that lived survivor experiences remain firmly at the centre of regional policy and justice reform.

"By uniting our voices, we ensure that no survivor is overlooked and that the systems charged with our protection are held truly accountable."
